Counting Large Numbers

We use Math Investigations in our school and they have a lot of fun games that the kids play.  I decided to take one of the games and re-make the idea in a winter theme.  Our kids need to practice counting and writing numbers up to 100, so this game has them using little "counters" to cover a mat.  There are several levels of support in order to differentiate for the different learning abilities in your class.  I haven't tried this one with my students yet, but I think they will like it.  Let me know if you try it with your students. Also, it's a really big file, so I had to post it in 2 separate files.   So, it's really late and I need to go to bed.

Snowflake Compound Words

Yhea, they work.  I remade the compound words.  I still can't figure out what I did wrong, but here are new ones.  They are not snowmen, but they are still cute.  I feel confidant that I have this down....finally!  Now I probably should concentrate on lesson plans and house cleaning.  Thank goodness we have a snow day tomorrow.

Snowmen Sentences Re-Do!!

I'm not sure what I did wrong the first time I made these, but I just decided to re-make them and now they seem to be working.  I used different graphics this time, but the words are the same.  Let's hope they work for everyone.  I'm going to re-do the compound words file also.  Look for the redo on them sometime tomorrow.  We will probably have a snow day and I  am very glad, yippie!

Working With Higher Numbers

We are getting to that part of our math curriculum where the kids need to start working with the  numbers that are higher than 20.  I know that they can rote count and write the numbers to 100, but I want them to be able to apply their learning.  This game has 2 parts, kind of differentiated.   Some of my students still need the 100's board as a support so I have them use one that they have made.  I hope this is a help for you all out there.  Let me know how it goes!

Children's Engineering: Pirate map

Several years ago, I went to a Children's Engineering Conference with our Gifted Teacher and learned so many cool things that we brought back to our school.  Now each year we have an Engineering Fair that all children in the building participate in.  It ranges from projects that children make at home with their families to the ones we all make in our classrooms.  The cool thing about engineering projects is that children are give "criteria" in which they must work within to problem solve and create a product.  I am posting a simple one that my team mate and I made during our unit on Maps.  I also posted some photo's of our finished products.  In the map project, the criteria was to make a map of an Island that had a Pirate's buried treasure.  The learning objective involved the students being able to show that a symbol stands for something and that these symbols on a map help a person locate a place. This is the simplified version of our state's Standards of Learning for First Grade Social Studies: Maps.  I have many more "Design Briefs", but wanted to start here because it is so fresh and the kids finished products were so neat looking.  I hope you enjoy!

I put this map up here even though it wasn't finished (the water wasn't colored in) because it shows all of the symbols so well.  I provided the kids with a Compass Rose that they cut out and pasted, but they could have drawn their own.

Penguin Place Value

Here's another place value game.  I thought up this game after seeing the adorable penguin counters that Sarah Cooley made and showed on her blog www.firstgraderatlast.blogspot.com/2010/12/rockin-penguin-counter.html.  Check them out, they each have their own personalities!  Anyway, here's a game to practice place value.  If anyone would like to see this game with hundreds place, I will make a game board and cards.  I might do it anyway, but I will take request.  Enjoy.

Is it a Sentence?

My students are having a hard time knowing what a full sentence is, so after seeing a game made by another creative person, I decided to make one myself.  The kids need to decide if the sign post is a complete or incomplete sentence and then sort it under the correct header.  When they are finished they will then use the incomplete sentences and make them into complete sentences. My students were using this activity as one of their choices during Work on Writing time.  Several worked together and they were having a fun time with it.  I hope you will be able to use this!

More Winter Math

Here's another math game I made for the concept of tens and ones.  What I want my kids to do is write the numbers out in expanded notation (even though they don't know that's what they are doing).  You could do it as just how many tens and how many ones.  Either way, I hope your children enjoy this one.

Winter Math Games

Hello everyone, here is my first attempt at making math games.  I used graphics from d.j.inkers and had a very fun time inventing different ways to use them.  I hope you will enjoy them.  The first one is "Igloo Addition/Subtraction".  The directions are attached and the game board will have to be in a separate download.   The recording sheet may need some explanation.  Students will roll three dice and then on the recording sheet write down the 3 numbers on the first row in #1.  The circles are for the students to write the plus sign or equal sign.  I want my kids to do this which is why I didn't supply the symbols.  The next row is for the subtraction side of the game.  The student will choose a card and then decide which is the higher number: the sum of the 3 dices or the card that they picked.  With these 2 numbers they will write their subtraction number sentence.  The answer of this is the number they cover on the game board.  Hope your students enjoy the game.
